This project exudes a sense of bravery and warmth. It defines the client’s love of colour along with being deeply in tune with the unique bush clad environment. Beach Haven has a friendly community and laid-back lifestyle and this house opens its doors to the surrounding environment and welcomes you in with a cheerful shout and a big warm embrace. Our client had lived in the 1980’s weatherboard home for several years before embarking on a full renovation. The new plans involved connecting the existing house and sleepout with a contemporary, light filled architectural ‘bridge’. We were tasked with invigorating and developing the interior spaces. Our brief was to welcome in the surrounding landscape and create a modern Log Cabin aesthetic.

Drawing from the clients love of primary colour and the bold exterior cladding choice, we selected several key materials to sustainably inject both colour and functional durability for this family of four. We used the colours to drive the definition of each space, and utilised bold and raw material choices to connect with the surrounding environment. Strandboard was used extensively as interior cladding for floors and walls to relay a low fuss, 'doc hut' kind of warmth in connection with the proposed new red joinery and structural steel. The central hallway is defined by green doors and powder coated yellow handles identifying access points and creating an interjection of playfulness and colour cohesion.
The kitchen was clad in diagonal macrocarpa boards wrapping around the space to create a cabin within the larger living room. The interplay of lines created structure and atmosphere, that accommodates a more intimate space. The Memphis Blue Melteca cabinetry with custom blue handles sits atop the blue lino tiles and is combined with durable satin finish stainless steel for the work surfaces. The 100% post consumer recycled HDPE plastic panel wrapping the kitchen island connects the kitchen ‘pod’ with the living spaces by combining a spattering of all colours in the one material.
The bathrooms also promote their individuality with the family bathroom incorporating a yellow powder-coated bespoke shower unit and a vanity in Olympia Yellow . All of this surrounded by Buttered Corn vinyl and white tapware and fittings. The ensuite bathroom, unique with Sugar Candy pink vinyl with accents of both red and white in the vanity. A home now strongly individual with a sense of energy and warmth.
